Covers for Cover 7: A music benefit series in Chicago ft female cover bands
December 11, 2015 @ 8:00 am - December 12, 2015 @ 12:30 am$15
I am honored (and super pumped!) to participate in Covers for Cover 7, a cover band benefit series in Chicago. The theme of the show involves bands of mostly female musicians playing covers to provide “cover” for women in need. Mia Park, a Chicago musician, has been producing the show for 9 years. The first several years, the show benefited female homeless shelters. Broadening the spectrum of what “cover” means and who’s being “covered,” last year Mia chose a teen homeless shelter that included young men and this year the show will benefit KAN-WIN, a local domestic violence center. Mia has been volunteering with KAN-WIN for over 15 years. The mission of KAN-WIN is to eradicate all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence and sexual assault.
I am a survivor of domestic abuse. The rates of domestic abuse in the United States are staggering: one in every 4 women and one out of every 7 men have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner at some point in their life. On top of that, 15.5 million children are exposed to violence in the home each year. Domestic abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual, economic, or psychological in nature.
One of the biggest barriers to ending the cycle of abuse is eliminating the shame and secrecy associated with it. That is why it is so important to share our stories. Although I have learned and grown so much from what I went through, I would never wish upon anyone the pain of experiencing violence in his or her life. I am grateful for the people and organizations that speak-out and support survivors of domestic abuse and am thrilled to be a part of Covers for Cover 7.
Bands that will be covered this year include the following:
Veruca Salt (my band!)
