Many of you know that I struggled with a life-threatening eating disorder in my teens and twenties. Thankfully, today I am recovered and have a (more than) healthy relationship with food & my body image. Recovery would not have been possible without the support of professionals, family, friends and ANAD.
ANAD is national non-for-profit organization based out of my hometown of Naperville, IL. Not only does ANAD spread eating disorder awareness in Chicago, but they also offer national support and resources for individuals and families battling an eating disorder – any eating disorder.
When people think of an eating disorder they may automatically think of Anorexia or Bulimia Nervosa- which are two of the more commonly discussed forms of eating disorders. However, there are many other forms of distorted eating that manifest in individuals; Binge Eating Disorder, Orthorexia, Over-Exercising and Cachexia are other forms of eating disorders that people should be aware of.
At the ANAD Bandstand Benefit on July 25th, you will get to hear an abbreviated version of my story of recovery from Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. You will also spend the evening enjoying comedy, music and dance from other recovered eating disorder victims. There will be drink specials all night, a generous raffle and silent auction for some amazing prizes (see list of donors below)!
100% of the evening’s proceeds will go directly to ANAD to support their mission of advocating for the development of healthy attitudes, bodies, and behaviors through supporting, educating, and connecting individuals, families, and professionals. ANAD’s school outreach program has helped educators address eating disorders in Chicagoland’s school systems, as well as empowered students with knowledge about body image and wellness.
I am honored to say that I am on their Jr. Board and have shared my story at many schools across the Chicagoland area. ANAD does great things! So get a group together and let’s celebrate healthy body and minds!
